It is difficult to remember a lot about significant roles that writing has played in my life, but I do remember that those two years of middle school really got me thinking about the connection of reading and writing. This is because I had a teacher that wanted the class to all read the same book and respond to questions that she created from the book. She always had a list of about 20 questions for each chapter. I used to hate reading to answer questions, but I realized that by answering the questions, I could remember details of the book better in order to write a reflection on what I have read. I think the time that I enjoyed reading and writing reflections the most in middle school was when the teacher let every student pick whatever book they wanted to read. She had a couple requirements that students need to follow, like the book had to be at least 125 pages, but that wasn't a difficult task.
I also remember that I learned a little about poetry. Poetry was something that was really interesting to me because I didn't understand how people could write things that are so beautiful. I learned about analogies, similes, metaphors, themes, and structure, and all of those things were so cool to me. Although a lot of students wouldn't admit that they like the poetry, I secretly knew that they did. The teacher used to ask the students to write their own poetry and I would try my hardest to write beautifully like those poets did. My teacher used to compliment the imagery in my poems and the metaphors. She told me that I was talented, but I didn't really believe it until later in high school.
I remember one time in middle school when she asked me to read my poem for the class because she thought it was so good. It is hard to think that I would be nervous doing anything in front of people, but I was a little nervous. Any time a teacher asked me to rad something in front of the class because of the talent that teacher said I have, it helped me to grow more confident as a writer, and it made me believe that writing is something I can do that gives joy to other people.
A lot of old paper assignments and things from that point in my life no longer is entact because of a house fire that my family suffered, so I cannot show any of that work unfortunately.
